Stress is a natural response to challenges and demands. In the workplace context, stress can help in the short-term for alertness, focus, and productivity. However, ongoing high level stress or stressors can be detrimental to mental health and performance.

How common is it?

One in five (21%) Australians reported having time off work in the past 12 months because they felt stressed, anxious, depressed or mentally unhealthy.

Are there different types of workplace stress?

Everyone experiences stress differently and will have different intensities of signs, symptoms and impacts. Commonly reported effects on mental health of workplace stress include burnout, anxiety, mood disorders, lowered motivation and emotional energy.
