Chronic illnesses are conditions that last for a long time and can have ongoing effects on you which may bring on feelings of stress or distress. Examples of chronic illnesses are diabetes, asthma, back pain, cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, osteoporosis, mental health conditions, and arthritis.
How common is it?
The Australian Institute of Health and Wellness reports that 1 in 2 Australians report experiencing one or more of common types of chronic conditions. 1 in 5 Australians had two or more chronic conditions.
Are there different types of chronic illness distress?
The impact of chronic illness can bring on different types of distress. It may be felt as constant stress or pressure, affect mood, cause a lot of worry or high anxiety levels, or affect day-to-day activities.
